It happens all the time.

What you can do if you find a wild animal that has been hurt or abandoned.

Here in the east mountains of central NM, people live in a more rural type of community. Depending on the location, it can feel pretty remote or more like a small town and it's only a half an hour drive into Albuquerque.

One thing I have learned from being out here is that there are a lot more birds and they are constantly flying into the windows. I have added features to our home to help prevent this, however, I have nursed a few back from shock. There was even a time when a hawk with a smaller bird as prey was in its talons and they flew into the bedroom window early in the morning. They both flew off but the hawk still caught its meal.

This particular morning a bird flew into the neighbor's window and when I arrived to assess, it was clear that it could still fly, was alert, but could not stand. It seemed to me that it's legs may have been damaged in the collision. My heart was breaking for this poor creature, and I started making calls: to my vet, who referred me to the emergency vet, who referred me to Wildlife Rescue Inc. NM. The Wildlife Rescue has instructions that are clearly explained in their voicemail, so, I followed them and got the bird down to them as quickly as possible.

What a wonderful experience. Everyone was kind and knowledgeable and they took the bird back. I asked a lot of questions since I would like to start a rescue of my own one day soon.

I did follow up to see if the birdy was able to pull through and sadly the injuries were too severe. The only thing that helps me not feel so sad about it, is knowing that at least it didn't suffer for too long.

I want to thank this organization for what they do and in doing so I hope to volunteer in the future.

I hope to have a bird inspired painting soon. The idea is in my mind already. Check back soon!
